How to Do Mental Math Multiplication
From equal groups to distributive shortcuts — a practical path to multiplying without a calculator.

See equal groups first
Multiplication begins as language: “four groups of six.” Arrays and skip counting make the symbol × meaningful. Visit Stage 12 before racing into abstract facts.
Anchor the easy families
Master ×2 (doubling), ×5 (half of ×10), and ×10 (place-value shift). These anchors unlock harder facts through distribution — for example, 7 × 6 = 7 × 5 + 7 × 1.
Rewrite awkward factors
×4 is double-double. ×8 is three doubles. ×9 is ×10 minus the number. ×11 for single digits duplicates the digit. These are strategies, not party tricks — each one maps to a real property of multiplication.
Practice without panic
Use Beat the Clock only after accuracy is steady. Speed is a side effect of clear strategies and spaced repetition.
