Tricks that teach, not just impress
The best “tricks” are compressed strategies. If a child can explain why the shortcut works, keep it. If it feels like magic with no meaning, pause and rebuild the concept.
Five high-value shortcuts
- Add 9 by adding 10 and subtracting 1
- Near doubles: 8 + 9 = double 8 + 1
- Multiply by 5 as half of multiply-by-10
- Multiply by 9 as multiply-by-10 minus the number
- Count up to subtract when numbers are close
